Naval Postgraduate School : Logo Design
The Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California wanted an emblem that would function as a brand icon for several internal departments and be a stepping-stone to a graphic standards system for a multi-layered military organization. An institution steeped in history and symbolism provided rich inspiration for the final design. The overall silhouette that originally echoed the shape of a ship’s hull was refined to a classic military shield. The four stars at the top represent freedom, learning, action and patriotism. An open book speaks to learning, rays of the sun represent new beginnings and the Latin phrase translates to “excellence through knowledge.” 1909 was the school’s founding year. Navy colors of blue, gold, black and white salute the prestigious history of the esteemed Naval Postgraduate School.
